Leather Spolas with Gorgoneion
This leather spolas draws inspiration from ancient Greek artistic traditions and the protective symbolism associated with the Gorgoneion, one of the most recognizable motifs of the ancient world. Combining historical influences with traditional leatherworking techniques, the piece was conceived as both a functional cuirass and a tribute to the artistry of Classical antiquity.
Constructed from high-quality vegetable-tanned leather in contrasting tones of natural tan and dark brown, the armor features a hand-carved and hand-painted Gorgon’s head prominently displayed on the chest. In antiquity, the Gorgoneion served as an apotropaic symbol, believed to ward off evil and inspire fear in one’s enemies. Its inclusion on this piece reflects a tradition found throughout Greek art, sculpture, and military iconography.
