Battle-Ready Leather Scale Spolas with Lion Head
This battle-ready leather spolas was inspired by the scale armor traditions of the ancient Mediterranean and designed to combine historical aesthetics with exceptional durability. Entirely handcrafted, the armor consists of 1,056 individually shaped leather scales mounted upon a robust leather foundation, creating a flexible yet remarkably resilient defense.
The construction of the cuirass required more than three and a half full cow hides, representing hundreds of hours of painstaking labor. In areas subjected to the greatest stress, the armor reaches an impressive thickness of up to 1.8 cm, resulting in a finished weight of approximately 9 kilograms. Despite its substantial protection, the articulated scales and layered construction allow for excellent mobility and comfort in use.
Dominating the chest is a hand-sculpted lion head, an ancient symbol of courage, strength, and royal authority frequently encountered in Greek art and mythology. The rich contrast between natural and dark brown leather tones highlights the texture of the scales, while a hand-tooled meander border decorates the armor and pays homage to one of the most enduring motifs of Greek ornamentation.
Designed not merely for display but for practical use, the cuirass was subjected to field testing against traditional bows fitted with historically inspired arrowheads. During these trials, the arrows failed to achieve full penetration, demonstrating the remarkable protective qualities afforded by the layered leather construction and the overlapping scales.
The layered pteruges, traditional fittings, and decorative details complete an armor that combines martial functionality with artistic expression. Every component was individually crafted by hand, reflecting the same dedication to quality and historical inspiration that characterizes all works produced by Epos Leather.
The result is an imposing and distinctive reconstruction that celebrates the ingenuity, symbolism, and enduring legacy of the warriors of the ancient Mediterranean. Combining over a thousand individually crafted scales with practical durability and meticulous attention to detail, this piece stands as a testament to both ancient inspiration and modern craftsmanship.
